BIRTHS

Actor Billy Bob Thornton (Friday Night Lights), 49, and his special-effects technician girlfriend, Connie Angland, 39, welcomed a daughter, Bella, Sept. 22. Thornton has three children from two previous marriages.

CONTROVERSIES

Yusuf Islam, 56, better known as the former folk-singer Cat Stevens (''Peace Train''), was denied entry to the U.S. Sept. 22, after Department of Homeland Security officials found his name on a terrorist no-fly list. His plane, en route from London to D.C., was diverted to Maine, and Islam was removed. In a statement, he said, ''Never would I believe that such a thing could happen in the 'land of the free.''' A spokesman for the DHS responded, ''It's conceivable that someone who's famous could do bad things.''

Soldier's Pay, a documentary by filmmaker David O. Russell, 46, was released by Cinema Libre Studio Sept. 23 in San Francisco. The doc, originally intended as part of Warner Bros.' upcoming DVD rerelease of Russell's Three Kings, was rejected by Warner execs last month for being ''a political polemic'' and returned to the director.

COURTS

Crooner Frankie Valli (''Grease''), 67, filed for divorce from Randy, his wife of 20 years, on Sept. 24 in L.A. The couple has three children.... Producer Phil Spector, 63, was indicted Sept. 27 for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, who was found shot dead in Spector's Alhambra, Calif., home Feb. 3, 2003. If convicted, Spector faces life in prison. His lawyer says the indictment is ''evidence of nothing.''... Courtroom artists Shirley and Andrea Shepard filed a copyright infringement suit Aug. 30 in NYC against Rosie O'Donnell, 42. The pair claims the former talk-show host used parts of their courtroom sketches from her 2003 breach-of-contract trial without permission in collages that she subsequently offered for sale in art galleries, and are seeking undetermined damages. O'Donnell's rep says the suit is ''without merit.''... Lil' Kim bodyguard Suif Jackson, 34, was sentenced Sept. 22 to 12 years in prison for possessing and firing a fully automatic machine gun during a 2001 shoot-out outside the studios of NYC hip-hop station Hot 97. Kim is scheduled to stand trial in February on charges — which she denies — that she lied to a grand jury about the incident.... On Sept. 22, prosecutors in Ventura County, Calif., charged Tracey Gold Marshall, 35, with three felony counts of driving under the influence and child endangerment. The charges stem from a Sept. 3 accident in which the former Growing Pains star rolled her SUV while driving with her husband and three children. Reps for Gold say, ''She is a terrific mother, and when everything gets sorted out, this will look very different than what's been reported.''... The estate of rock legend Jimi Hendrix, who died of a drug overdose in 1970 at age 27, was settled in Seattle on Sept. 24 after a legal battle that began when father Al Hendrix died in 2002. Jimi's brother Leon Hendrix had petitioned for a share of an estimated $80 million, but a judge ruled that stepsister Janie Hendrix will continue to manage the bulk of the estate.
