Still On, Still Good
ER (NBC, Thursdays, 10 p.m.) Showing resilience despite its revolving cast door, ER still has some of the most compelling, complex, and tortured characters on network television.
GILMORE GIRLS (The WB, Tuesdays, 8 p.m.) GG's writers are rewooing diehards by lathering up the suds this season: Rory breaks up Dean's marriage! Lorelai's parents separate! Luke and Lorelai are together—finally!
KING OF THE HILL (Fox, Sundays, 7 p.m.) When you get Johnny Depp to visit Texas, you know you're doing something right. Arrested Development's Jason Bateman and Jackass' Johnny Knoxville drop by the charmingly demented comedy's ninth season, which starts Nov. 7.
NYPD BLUE (ABC, Tuesdays, 10 p.m.) In its 12th and final season, thegroundbreakingcop series is not going gentle into that good night. That's bad news for the long-suffering Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz), who's dealing with a stalker and his son's kidnapping.
SOUTH PARK (Comedy Central, Wednesdays, 10 p.m.) Season 8 resumes Oct. 27 with seven new episodes that promise to deliver potty humor and the best social satire on TV (''The Passion of the Jew,'' anyone?). —Alynda Wheat
