Rocker Memoir 101: Sex, Drugs, And Still More Drugs

EW rates rock star memoirs -- Anthony Kiedis, Tommy Lee and Dave Navarro offer candid insights into the rock n roll lifestyle in their new books

Anthony Kiedis with Larry Sloman's Scar Tissue

The Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman tells how a scrappy young screwup became a scrappy older screwup.

Needles and the Damage Done He once drew his own blood, rubbed it on his lips, and left ''blood kisses'' on a girl's windshield.

Prince Connection Dated Sinéad O'Connor, who covered ''Nothing Compares 2 U.''

Tool Time On performing naked but for a well-placed tube sock: ''These were long socks.''

Anthony on Anthony ''I'm a control freak, and I want what I want and I want it immediately.''

Bottom Line Despite nice passages about the addiction/recovery/relapse cycle, Tissue reads like an extended one-time-at-band-camp monologue. C

Tommy Lee with Anthony Bozza's Tommyland

The Mötley Crüe drummer recaps his rise from scrawny outsider to badass rock star and tattooed father of two.

Needles and the Damage Done ''We'd shoot up coke and heroin onstage if we wanted to.''

Prince Connection

Dated Carmen Electra and was briefly engaged to Prince ex Mayte Garcia.

Tool Time Lee's, ahem, member is one of the book's narrators. Seriously.

Tommy on Tommy ''You'd never guess it by looking at me, but I'm a closet horticulturalist.''

Bottom Line Lee's attempts at yuk-yuk humor often result simply in yuck. But while this trifle pales next to 2001's Crüe book The Dirt, the pages vibrate with Lee's crazy energy. B-

Dave Navarro and Neil Strauss' Don't Try This at Home

A year in the life of the former Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, during which he was visited by drug dealers and other creatures of the night.

Rehab Visits 2

Needles and the Damage Done Navarro used his syringe to scrawl blood on a wall in the Playboy Mansion.

Prince Connection Currently married to Carmen Electra.

Tool Time Dave says he's very happy with what God gave him.

Dave on Dave ''I don't have a bad life.... I just want to be able to perform well — and look good doing it.''

Bottom Line This oddly compelling documentary-cum-coffee-table book pulls no punches. B+
