After a 10-year absence, ultra-sensitive singer-songwriter Mark Eitzel is helming a reconvened AMC, the group that first gave shape to his singular songs of panoramic melancholy. As before, there are hints of redemption and humor on Love Songs for Patriots, even in Eitzel's most downbeat tunes, which on this disc are shot through with lush-but-not-obtrusive orchestration that complements his morose, yet oddly comforting, vocals. To paraphrase the late Jimi Hendrix: an album for people with hearts—any kind of hearts.
