At last, the so-called ''letter of truth'' Britney Spears has been promising to write to her fans has been posted on her website, and the message is: I haven't had a vacation in seven years, and I need a break. ''Going & going & going is all I've ever known since I was 15 years old,'' she writes. ''It's amazing what advisors will push you to do, even if it means taking a naive, young, blonde girl & putting her on the cover of every magazine.'' Now that she's married and actually taking time for a honeymoon, she writes, ''I want to enjoy all of the simple things that I missed over the past few years due to working way too much.''
Spears writes that her knee injury this summer, which forced the cancellation of her Onyx Hotel Tour, was a wake-up call. ''I know now that my knee gave out on me this past summer so that I would have no choice but to stop. My body was shutting down and needed rest. It's funny how the Man upstairs works.'' Now that she's discovered she has the freedom to say, ''NO!'' she cites the title of her current single and writes, ''My prerogative right now is to just chill & let all of the other overexposed blondes on the cover of Us Weekly be your entertainment... GOOD LUCK GIRLS!!''
On Spears' to-do list: Catch up with movies and TV repeats. ''I really want to watch Saved with Mandy Moore and reruns of Sex and the City.'' Also, start having children with new hubby Kevin Federline. ''Being married is GREAT and I can't wait to start my family!''
It's not clear how long Spears' sabbatical will last. Last time she said she was going on a six-month vacation -- in the summer of 2002, after her world tour wrapped -- she ended up going back to work almost immediately, recording her CD In the Zone. She begins the current letter by telling fans she plans to post similar dispatches ''as often as possible.'' She adds, ''Also, I'm not going to be as busy as my Mom. She's running behind my sister like crazy!'' Uh-oh, looks like 13-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears is the next relentlessly driven child star in training. An impulsive Vegas wedding is probably only a few years away.
