Somewhere between Gilligan's coconut high jinks and the suspense of Lostlies a 1969 survival drama created by Aaron Spelling and Rod Serling. The New People followed a diverse group of college students whose plane crashes, killing their chaperone and leaving them on a deserted island once intended for nuclear testing (a convenient twist that provides shelter and dune buggies!). Despite its unusual 45-minute length and regular guest stars (Tyne Daly!), New People didn't make it through the season. ''It was one of our favorite shows to do, but so expensive,'' says Spelling (though he was unable to track down a tape of the show, we scored the first episode through the magic of the Internet). ''I wish we had known about it before,'' says Damon Lindelof, exec producer of Lost, ''so we could've changed Charlie's [Dominic Monaghan] band name to the New People instead of Driveshaft.''
