Why we can't wait to see ''Finding Neverland''

RELEASE DATE Nov. 12

WHY WE CAN'T WAIT We've already waited a year: The movie was shelved to avoid conflict with last winter's live-action Peter Pan. Besides, we're up for anything involving Johnny Depp and pirates.

THE PREMISE Depp is playwright J.M. Barrie, whose friendship with Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet) and her young sons inspired him to write Peter Pan.

SOURCE Allan Knee's play The Man Who Was Peter Pan

THE BACK STORY Scholars have grumbled about the film's historical accuracy (Sylvia actually had five boys, not four, and she wasn't yet a widow when she met Barrie). One thing even scholars can't agree on, however, is the nature of Barrie's relationship with the boys. Depp defends the filmmakers' decision not to portray the relationship as anything but platonic. ''Maybe he was a little sideways with the children,'' Depp says, ''But f---, that's an obvious way to go, isn't it?''

BURNING QUESTION Can this movie earn Depp the Oscar that escaped him last year for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl?

COME FOR Depp, who's had the ''I'm in touch with my inner child'' thing down cold since Edward Scissorhands

STAY FOR Child actor Freddie Highmore, who so impressed Depp as young Peter Llewelyn Davies that he won the title role in Tim Burton's upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, opposite Depp's Willy Wonka
