MUSIC Talked to some folks at the American Music Awards Nov. 14. Said John Mayer: ''I just did something with Kanye West for his album in the studio. I also think I'll get to work on my next album soon. I'm closing up shop on acoustic, sensitive singer-songwriter stuff. I'm going to start something on the electric guitar. It'll be a whole new John.'' And this from American Idol Fantasia Barrino: ''I'm going to be a Simpson'' as in The Simpsons; it's not like Jessica and Ashlee's dad is adopting her (she will have to lip-synch since it's a cartoon, no?). ''I play Clarissa. I sing on it as part of an American Idol-type show, but I lose to Lisa Simpson. Hopefully, they'll give me short hair and a pants suit.''
TELEVISION Does your mom cry at the end of every Extreme Makeover: Home Edition too? Then tell her to get ready for Extreme Makeover: Wedding Edition ABC's upcoming one-hour special will take a regular couple and give them a superwedding, and then hopefully spin off into a regular show. ''I can't wait to blow the lid off the wedding genre,'' says exec producer Craig Armstrong. Will there be elephants? ''You want an elephant?'' he laughs. ''It depends, man. If we've got a couple, and elephants are their thing, you never know.'' Armstrong is all about feel-good reality TV: He wants families to turn off his shows ''and hug'' and say ''I love you.'' ''That's positive not only for reality in general,'' he says, ''but for society too. It's corny, I know, but true.''
MOVIES The Da Vinci Code is as underrated as any 10-million-copy-selling megabook can be. Don't be a hater: It's a great read! And now we have a face to put on the book's hero symbologist, Robert Langdon, because Tom Hanks is in talks to star in the Ron Howard movie version.... Check out The Last Kiss, this really sweet and thoughtful Italian romance that our man Owen Gleiberman called one of 2002's best. It's about a guy who gets commitment jitters. Great, but what's this got to do with the Deal Report? Well, hot young things Zach Braff (Garden State) and Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) are set to costar in the was it inevitable? American remake. So there you go!
