What is this craziness? The kids are back in school, movies targeted at grown-ups are finally hitting the theaters again, and you're going to see ''Blue Streak''? And don't try to pretend that you're not planning to stand in line to see the teen romantic comedy ''Drive Me Crazy.'' As a friend says, any movie that is named after a Britney Spears song should immediately get crossed off your must-see list.

But I digress. The point is, there are wonderful movies sneaking into theaters and you're missing them. If ''American Beauty'' seems too bleak for you, run to see ''Guinevere,'' starring Sarah Polley and Stephen Rea. Yes, it's about a May-December romance, but it's interesting and well-acted, often funny, and quirky enough that it doesn't feel sentimental until the last scene. (With that warning, you have my blessing to leave before that moment -- get up and head for the door when you see a group of women sitting around a dinner table). In the mood for scarier fare? Check out ''Stir of Echoes.'' It's got all the good stuff of ''Sixth Sense'' -- a high spooky quotient, clever plotting -- and it will make you scream with terror. Plus, there are some really gross scenes that will put you in the right mindset for Halloween.

Finally, if standing in an endless line to score a ticket is part of your movie-going ritual, bring your tent and sleeping-bag and try to score a seat to see ''Three Kings'' this weekend. It's phenomenal, and it's got George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and a really cool Beach Boys soundtrack. Now, I know from all of your lovely responses to past columns how highly you value my opinion, so go ahead -- go see ''Blue Streak.'' But then, please, won't you check out one of the others?
