LEGACY
Terry Melcher, who died at 62 of cancer Nov. 19 in Beverly Hills, was a Zelig-like presence on the SoCal music scene. His band the Rip Chords, with future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, hit No. 4 in '64; in '65, he produced both the Byrds' No. 1 hits. Candice Bergen was a girlfriend; Charles Manson, whom he denied a record contract, an enemy. Years after producing two TV series for mom Doris Day, Melcher hit the pop jackpot again, co-writing the Boys' 1988 ''Kokomo.''
