Murphy's Law

Emmy winner Candice Bergen will join the cast of ABC's Boston Legal. She will play Shirley Schmidt, a partner in the series' law firm Crane Poole & Schmidt, at which James Spader's and William Shatner's characters also work.

Bergen won five Emmys for playing the title character of Murphy Brown, a sitcom about an opinionated news anchor. The actress — who's recently costarred in the films Sweet Home Alabama and Miss Congeniality — will also appear in a recurring role on NBC's Law & Order: Trial by Jury, debuting in January.
