  • "One True Thing" Meryl Streep will make you cry whether you like it or not, playing a dying mom whose driven journalist daughter (RenĂ©e Zellweger) begrudgingly leaves work to take care of her. The film, which also stars William Hurt, is based on the novel by Anna Quindlen and is directed by Carl Franklin ("One False Move," "Devil in a Blue Dress"). (EW Grade: B-)
  • "Rush Hour" Jackie Chan's fists and Chris Tucker's words fly at equal speeds in this action/comedy. Chan is a Chinese agent who teams with a plays-by-his-own-rules cop (Tucker) to save the kidnapped daughter of a diplomat. Chan may not speak perfect English, but he has certainly learned the phrase "buddy comedy." (EW Grade: C-)
  • "Permanent Midnight" Ben Stiller portrays a drug-addicted television writer slipping out of control in this movie based on the harrowing memoir of Jerry Stahl (costarring Elizabeth Hurley and Janeane Garofalo). The drug-taking scenes are quite graphic, so don't go expecting more wacky testicle humor from Stiller. The film opened in New York and L.A. on Wednesday and will open around the country next Friday. (EW Grade: C)
  • "A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries" Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Hershey play parents struggling to maintain a traditional family amid the turbulent 1960s. The film (which is in limited release) is directed by period-piece stalwart James Ivory ("The Remains of the Day," "Howard's End"), who is slowly inching his way toward making a movie set in the present day. (EW Grade: C)
