ABC News recently pulled a segment from "20/20" that was critical of Disney (ABC's parent company), the Washington Post reported today. The piece is based on a new book called "Disney: The Mouse Betrayed," about alleged lax hiring and safety practices at Disney World. "20/20" had landed exclusive rights to the book, whose publisher had delayed its release to coincide with the segment's broadcast, originally scheduled for sometime in September. But when ABC News president David Westin read the script, he reportedly blew up and asked if the producers were "crazy."
ABC maintains that the segment was pulled because it was editorially flawed and not because of the claims against its owners, which include charges that Disney's theme park had Peeping Tom problems and didn't screen its employees for sex offenses. A network spokesperson said that a revised version of the piece might air in the future. But the book's publisher said he doubted that would happen. He is discussing bringing the book to CBS' "60 Minutes."
