One of the loopiest musical collaborations in recent memory finds legendary Beatles producer George Martin teaming with such celebs as Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Goldie Hawn, and Sean Connery on "In My Life" (Echo/MCA), an album of Fab Four covers new in stores this week. On the CD's liner notes, Martin says he chose "people I had always liked and admired to join me in music that has been a big part of my life. The Beatles could hardly be part of it, so I instead selected their songs and fit them to some unlikely voices."
"Unlikely" is a kind word for Hawn's rendition of "A Hard Day's Night" or Williams' "Come Together." But one pleasant surprise is former "Pet Detective" Carrey's antic interpretation of the tricky Lennon-McCartney classic "I Am the Walrus." Martin says he became a fan of the comic actor after seeing him in "Batman." "Here was a guy who seemed able to tackle anything," Martin explains. "A naturally funny person, completely extrovert. I am sure John would have loved this version of his song."
Beatles fans who'd prefer to hear "Walrus" performed by professional musicians can check out Oasis' upcoming B-Sides collection, "The Masterplan" (Epic, available Nov. 3), which features a six-minute live version done by the would-be Lennon-McCartney of the '90s, Noel and Liam Gallagher.
