'Deep Impact' and 'Lion King II' top this week's rentals

"Deep Impact" is crashing into video stores weeks before "Armageddon" (Nov. 13). Not that it mattered when the Tea Leoni flick did the same in theaters: "Armageddon" ended up as the summer's No. 1 film ($199 million), while "Impact" trailed with $140 million. But at least "Impact" has a chance of topping its video rival. "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride" has no shot at beating the original "Lion King" movie, which has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide -- the best-selling video ever. Here are this week's video releases (with EW critics' grades):

  • Deep Impact Last summer's first encounter with life-ending flotsam from outer space stars Morgan Freeman as the President, Tea Leoni as a spunky journalist, and Elijah Wood as the movie's token teen heartthrob. (EW grade: C+)
  • The Lion King II: Simba's Pride The circle of life just keeps on turning: Neve Campbell voices Kiara, the infant cub of the pride's current king, Simba. The direct-to-video sequel features voices of the original movie, including Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, and Nathan Lane. (EW Grade: C+)
  • The Big Hit Mark Wahlberg, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Christina Applegate star in this movie about a kidnapping caper gone sour. (EW Grade: D)
  • Clockwatchers Parker Posey and Lisa Kudrow get lots of laughs as temp workers who slave away at the bottom of the corporate ladder. (EW Grade: A-)
  • The Butcher Boy Old "Crying Game" buddies Neil Jordan and Stephen Rea team up for this film about a preadolescent bully coming of age in '60s Ireland. (EW Grade: C)

  • Gone with the Wind Why should you give a damn? Frankly, because with all of the digital retouching that went on with this version of the all-time box office champ (the film has grossed more than "Titanic," adjusted for inflation), Rhett and Scarlet haven't looked this good since people first saw them on the big screen in 1939.
