'American History X' director Tony Kaye disses his own flick; plus tomorrow's film openings

The skinhead drama "American History X" enters theaters tomorrow, and audiences can finally see if they agree with the director who says... it stinks. Tony Kaye, 46, has been publicly sniping at New Line execs and the film's star Edward Norton for months, accusing them of not letting him edit "X" as he wished, and demanding that his name be taken off its credits. (The Director's Guild of America rejected his request.) The mercurial British director skipped the film's L.A. premiere Monday night and told Variety's Army Archerd that he's seen the final cut and "I could have fixed it." Norton, for his part, recently told EW, "Tony Kaye is a victim of nothing but his own professional and spiritual immaturity. Period."

Here are the notable movies opening tomorrow (with EW critics' grades):

  • American History X Edward Norton is an ex-skinhead fresh out of jail who tries to deprogram his racist younger brother (Edward Furlong). "X" is debuting only in the top ten markets, but will open across the country on Nov. 13. (EW Grade: B+)
  • Living Out Loud Holly Hunter is a rich divorcee who bonds with elevator operator Danny DeVito over the plight of lonely, middle-aged New Yorkers. Screenwriter Richard LaGravenese ("The Bridges of Madison County," "Beloved") steps behind the camera for the first time to direct his own script. "Living" opens in New York and L.A., and will expand nationally next Friday. (EW Grade: C)
  • John Carpenter's Vampires The horror guru who made knives the weapon of choice with 1978's "Halloween" is raising the stakes with this undead tale. James Woods is a vampire hunter battling the toothsome villains. (EW Grade: C-)
