'The Waterboy' tackles critics and breaks records as the top movie

And a bonehead shall lead them. "The Waterboy," Adam Sandler's comedy about a dim-witted outcast-turned-football star, not only came in first this weekend with an estimated $39.4 million, but set multiple records in the process. The film was the highest debut ever for a November or December opening; the biggest Disney live-action debut (and second only to the animated "Lion King," which did $40.8 million); and the highest one-day take for any Disney movie (Saturday's $16.1 million). The film was sacked by critics, averaging a D in EW's Critical Mass, but for this kind of teen comedy reviews aren't much of a factor with young moviegoers. In fact, only about five percent of the people who saw "Waterboy" were older than 34.

"Waterboy" was also a major factor in lifting the weekend's total grosses to $102 million, a 30 percent jump from the same time last year. Also contributing to the total were "The Siege" (No. 2 with $13.9 million), "Pleasantville" (No. 3, $5.6 million), and "Antz" (No. 4, $5.6 million). In fifth place, "The Wizard of Oz" ($5.4 million) trounced another rerelease, 1983's "The Big Chill," which took in only $65,000 -- thus proving the film's funeral-scene song: You can't always get what you want.
