Oprah. Just call her Mogul Spice. Oprah Winfrey is flexing her girl power muscle these days by joining forces with two other distaff media powerhouses to start a new cable network just for women.
Winfrey, television producer Marcy Carsey, and former Nickelodeon president Geraldine Laybourne are the chick triumvirate behind the Oxygen Channel, which is expected to bow in the year 2000. Despite the airheaded moniker, the network has already carved out a demo-savvy line-up. Oxygen will feature a little something for femmes of all ages, starting with a morning block of chat-oriented programming called the Hive. Midday will feature shows geared towards working women, while the afternoon will hone in on teenage girls. Sitcom reruns, mostly material from Carsey's stable such as "Cybill" and "Roseanne," would fill in the evening hours.
While all of this female bonding may seem awfully warm and fuzzy, that doesn't mean there won't be a catfight down the line. Oxygen will likely go head to head with Lifetime, the only other network to aim exclusively for female viewers. Already in 72 million homes, Lifetime has been pumping up its roster of original programming of late and recently added women's basketball to its slate.
