Michael Caine is honored, Jewel's grandfather dies, and Garry Shandling may play an alien

DIED Jewel's grandfather, Yule Kilcher, an author of the Alaskan state constitution, died Tuesday in a Homer, Alaska, hospital. No cause of death has been reported for Kilcher, who was 85.

WINNERS The National Board of Review announced that Academy Award winner Michael Caine, currently in "Little Voice," will receive its annual career-achievement award at a Feb. 8 gala. Previous winners include Sidney Poitier, James Stewart, Gregory Peck, and Gena Rowlands. The critical favorite "Gods and Monsters," starring Ian MacKellen and Brendan Fraser, will receive the Board's Best Picture award.

ON THE AIR (AGAIN) Two previously canceled TV shows will air again in January: UPN's drama "The Sentinel," about a crime fighter with extrasensory powers, will be broadcast Mondays at 9 p.m., and NBC's Al Franken sitcom "Lateline" will return to its 9:30 p.m. slot Wednesday nights.

SWEET DEAL "Primary Colors" director Mike Nichols is reportedly talking to Columbia Pictures about directing, "What Planet Are You From?" The premise of this adult comedy is really out there. It's about an alien (Garry Shandling) with a vibrating mechanical appendage that will help him in his mission: to procreate on earth.
