'Hurlyburly' star Garry Shandling says his upcoming alien adventure may be the last film he acts in for a while

From "The Larry Sanders Show" to... an alien with a mechanical penis? Garry Shandling, whose post-"Sanders" career has gone big screen with roles in the just-opened "Hurlyburly" and the upcoming Warren Beatty flick "Town and Country," has yet another movie project in the works. Shandling's comedy script "What Planet Are You From?" is tentatively scheduled to shoot this May with Mike Nichols ("Primary Colors," "The Graduate") at the helm.

In the feature Shandling will star as an alien sent to Earth to breed with a little help from a vibrating gizmo. Not surprisingly, his high-tech apparatus has made him a hit in Hollywood. "Mike Nichols called me and said, 'I want to direct your movie,' and I felt as enthusiastic and as excited as I did when I began 'Larry Sanders,'" Shandling tells EW Online with just a hint of mock enthusiasm.

Though Shandling isn't exactly kicking back Seinfeld-style these days, he admits to being a bit out of sorts now that his cable series is off the air. "I think I prefer myself more behind the camera than in front of the camera -- as does the audience, I might add," he says. "So I think I'll eventually end up writing and creating and probably directing."
