NBC cut 40 minutes out of the two-hour-and-52-minute Al Pacino-Robert De Niro crime drama to fit it into a three-hour TV slot (which has 48 minutes of commercial time). Mann had offered to add footage he removed from the released version to fill it out for a four-hour run, but NBC refused. "Artistically, I deplore what they did," said Mann, "and I also criticize it as being piss-poor management of an asset they paid a lot of money for."
