James Van Der Beek outdraws Sharon Stone

With no new high-profile films to challenge it, "Varsity Blues" scored again, staying at No. 1 at the box office for the second consecutive week. Grossing an estimated $10.6 million, the James Van Der Beek football flick accounted for approximately 12 percent of total theater revenue, a tribute to how slow January is. Sharon Stone's "Gloria," the only major opener this weekend, was not screened for critics and debuted in a dismal 15th place with only $2.1 million.

Meanwhile, other January premieres continue to trickle down the charts while leftover Christmas movies remain high. Rounding out the top 5 were "Patch Adams" ($8.1 million), "A Civil Action" ($7.6 million), "The Thin Red Line" ($5.8 million), and "Stepmom" ($5.2 million). Of last week's debuts, "At First Sight" slipped to sixth in its second week with $4.8 million, and "Virus" proved to be not very infectious, landing at 11th with $2.8 million.
