AWARDS WATCH The Directors Guild of America announced its nominees for its annual best director award: Roberto Benigni ("Life is Beautiful"), John Madden ("Shakespeare in Love"), Terrence Malick ("The Thin Red Line"), Steven Spielberg ("Saving Private Ryan"), and Peter Weir ("The Truman Show"). Other winners at the BFCA ceremony yesterday were actors Ian McKellen, Billy Bob Thornton, Cate Blanchett, Joan Allen, and Kathy Bates.
