Will Kevin Costner team with 'The Godfather'? Madonna may direct her first film; Foxy Brown fires her manager and record label

REEL DEALS The roller coaster that is Kevin Costner's "13 Days" is now making another climb. Francis Ford Coppola may take over the Cuban Missile Crisis film, directorless since Phil Alden Robinson ("Field of Dreams") backed out. The $90 million film was dropped by Universal because of its big budget and picked up by Sony Pictures, but Universal has the opportunity to reclaim it since its contract says it can reconsider if the project vastly changes (e.g., a different director). And now, with Costner proving bankable again with "Message in a Bottle," the film doesn't seem like such a risky investment.... Madonna has optioned another book for her production company: "Fires," the tale of a young small-town woman who searches for the psychological reason she keeps committing arson. Because the protagonist is in her early 20s, the singer is too old to star, but she may make the film her directorial debut.

PROFESSIONAL SPLITS Foxy Brown announced that she's leaving her manager, Chris Lighty, and his record label, Violator -- two weeks after her second album with him, "Chyna Doll," debuted at No. 1. According to Billboard, Brown is talking to the producers Tone & Poke about joining their Trackmasters label.

COURT CASES Coolio pled innocent in a California court yesterday to carrying a concealed weapon. The rapper was pulled over in his Hummer last September, and he told the cops that he had a 9mm semiautomatic pistol in a pouch on the car door. Coolio was convicted for a similar offense in 1994, which makes this charge more serious; his pretrial hearing is set for March 3.... Florence Henderson is suing the makers of a T-shirt which has an unauthorized picture of the "Brady Bunch" mom with the words "Porn Queen" underneath. In her court papers, she says that the company, Serial Killer Inc. exposed her to "contempt and ridicule." (The company's advertising says "(our) products are funny and make old people upset.") The amount of damages she's seeking hasn't been made public.

CASTING Denis Leary will star in "The Eddie Klep Story," playing the titular baseball player who was the first white man to play baseball in the Negro Leagues after Jackie Robinson's move to the major leagues in 1947.

BYGONES Smashing Pumpkins have welcomed back drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who was kicked out of the band in 1995 for using drugs (keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died of an overdose that year). The group is now working on a new album in Chicago.
