Monster in a Box

The original creep-out king spills his guts to EW Online about his James Bond fixation

Move over, Marilyn Manson. Original androgynous freak rocker Alice Cooper is back with a 4-CD boxed set, ''The Life and Crimes of Alice Cooper.'' The stuff of an obsessive fan's dreams, the 84-track monster features the expected hits, such as ''Welcome to My Nightmare'' and ''School's Out,'' plus a gushing introduction from professional curmudgeon Johnny Rotten. But some of the more obscure tracks may have even the most devoted Alice junkies scratching their heads. According to Cooper, these unknown gems may be the best part.

''There were a few songs I kind of insisted on giving a second life to and honoring on the album,'' the former Vincent Furnier tells EW Online. ''They were little songs that never got played but to me were absolute jewels, little masterpieces.''

One of those little masterpieces is, oddly enough, ''Man With the Golden Gun,'' a track that pays tribute to 007 and features terminally chipper diva Liza Minelli on backup vocals. ''I'm a big James Bond fan,'' says the 51-year-old Cooper. ''I've seen every movie, and I said to myself, 'I can write a Bond theme that's so much better.''' Unfortunately, when the producers of the 1974 Bond installment of the same name picked a theme song, Cooper found himself trumped by washed-up '60s songbird Lulu. It's a slight that still has Cooper ticked: ''I still think it's the best Bond theme that never was.''
