The romance between Renée Zellweger and Chris O'Donnell in ''The Bachelor'' may tug audience heartstrings, but cynics can find joy too. O'Donnell, who is married with a 2-month-old daughter, admits he was never the suave and swinging single he plays in the film. ''Everybody has this glorified image that they're some wild, crazy bachelor,'' says the 29-year-old, ''but I just don't have any stories.''
Popping the question off screen wasn't much more exciting for the actor. ''I wasn't as smooth as I would have liked to have been,'' he says. To surprise his beloved, O'Donnell decided to skip the usual fancy-dinner-and-flowers scenario. Instead, he plopped her down on the sofa and leafed through an engagement-ring catalog. ''I pointed at one ring and said, 'I don't think it's a very good-looking ring.' And she said, 'What are you talking about? It's beautiful!' So I told her 'I like this one better,' pulled out the ring I had bought beforehand and proposed.''
As for Zellweger, any proposals she's received have been exclusively on screen. ''I have no experience in this department,'' shrugs the 30-year-old actress. ''I have no expectations about what it should be like, and I don't want to, so I won't be disappointed. I don't care how it's done or how it comes. I mean, it would just be neat to be in the position to have it happen.'' (Neat?) Meanwhile, she's happy to be a bridesmaid instead of a bride. ''I've never tried to catch the bouquet, but I've taken home some flower arrangements,'' she says. ''And a little silverware, that sort of thing.''
