ALL APOLOGIES Kilborn's Bush joke backfired
Kilborn: Monty Brinton
We hate to sound like a lame opening monologue joke, but what's the deal with CBS late night talk shows and George W. Bush? First there was the Republican nominee's disastrous March performance via satellite on ''The Late Show With David Letterman'' Now there’s the Craig Kilborn flap.

On Aug. 4, ''The Late Late Show'' ran an image of the Texas titan with the phrase ''Snipers Wanted'' on the screen. Though CBS and Kilborn both apologized for the gag, the controversy won’t die. On Aug. 18, FCC commissioner Gloria Tristani sent a letter to CBS Television head Les Moonves, criticizing the ''appalling broadcast'' and saying that ''citizens do not think [the apologies] are enough.'' A spokesperson for CBS tells EW.com that ''we appreciate her concerns, as shown by the fact that we've issued repeated apologies for the incident.'' As for the presidential hopeful himself, a campaign spokesperson provides a subtle dis of his own, noting that ''No one involved with the Bush campaign watched the program.'' When will the sniping stop?
