Don't get me wrong -- the 13 episodes in The Sopranos: The Complete First Season, which introduced viewers to melancholy New Jersey mafioso Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), are among TV's finest hours, and it's worth buying this set just to own them. Too bad the DVDs weren't assembled with such care.
Only the pilot features a commentary, a largely unenlightening conversation between terse, self deprecating creator David Chase and fawning, self-indulgent actor-director Peter Bogdanovich (who played a therapist in the second season). Even worse, some anecdotes are rehashed in a rambling 77 minute video interview between Bogdanovich and Chase. And what, no f---in' outtakes?
