Although ''nothing official'' was decided, Foster says Azoff ''is interested'' in giving the 20 year old singer the international spotlight. The opening ceremonies on Feb. 8, 2002, will reach nearly 3 billion viewers -- and potential record buyers. But why pick Aguilera over fellow blond songstress Britney Spears? Foster says Spears is a star, but not ''a great singer.... If I know anything at all, it's whether someone can sing, and Christina can really blow people away.''
If Salt Lake City turns out to be what this girl wants, Aguilera will be in good company: Gloria Estefan, Whitney Houston, and Olivia Newton-John have all sung recent Olympic anthems. And even if she decides to pass on the quadrennial opportunity, Foster says Aguilera should consider his offer a vote of confidence in her career longevity. ''I know she'll definitely be around,'' he promises. At least for another two years, that is.
