In Autumn in New York, a prototypical ''most eligible bachelor'' (Gere) eyes a feather fragile hatmaker (Ryder) 26 years his junior, and decides to add her to his coterie of conquests. But, conveniently, she's dying and he falls in love. Filled with numbingly simple metaphors (winter=death, spring=rebirth), this film's real collapse is brought on by its stars, who manage to make even playful flirtation congeal into nauseating goo. Director Joan Chen bathes this fiasco in the twinkling light of a Pottery Barn catalog, and ultimately, it's got about as much depth.
