One way to refresh the bank of film scoring ideas is to hire outside the ranks of usual suspects. For the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon music, Chinese American composer Tan Dun, celebrated for his classical and operatic writing, conceived an elegant and exciting body of East West orchestral music. Cellist Yo Yo Ma is sometimes a melodic protagonist, and CoCo Lee sings the theme song, ''A Love Before Time.'' But the hero is Tan, whose evocative score defies clichés and gravity, like the movie's gymnastic mystics.
