As for the Earthsea saga, the author is none too worried about Hollywood ruining her legacy for new audiences. ''I don't think a movie ever really hurt a book,'' says Le Guin. ''Readers will go on reading the books. They've been reading them for 30 years.'' True, even if some of us had to hide them from our professors.
