Nat Turner (Fall 2005)

Award-winning artist-writer Kyle Baker (King David) uses the revolutionary slave's own words from an almost 200-year-old confession and produces startlingly iconographic images of the evils of slavery, including the infamous Middle Passage, in Nat Turner. The first of Baker's four-part series follows Turner's mother from her idyllic African village to the feces- and corpse-littered slave ship and onto the block. It's a hauntingly beautiful historical spotlight.
