The chronological sequencing on Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best of the Replacements confirms their descent into mere competence, and the two semi-reunion cuts tacked on at the end are riff-by-numbers re-creations of their glory days. But the first Replacements anthology to span their entire career still makes the point that few indie (or non-indie) rockers shredded their throats like Paul Westerberg, and few did so in the context of more poignant or uninhibited songs. Many, including the Goo Goo Dolls, ripped off their sound, but few approached their soul.
