Hav Plenty
Cherot, 30, intended this quirky love story — which he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in — as nothing more than a video résumé to secure funding for his next project. He got his funding — and a distributor as well — when Miramax reportedly paid $1.2 million for his tale of a hapless screenwriter's lust for a totally together woman. While the film has played well to festival audiences and has secured Cherot a deal to make more Miramax movies, the filmmaker has mixed feelings about Hav Plenty's success. "It's a struggle to maintain what I consider to be the integrity of my original [film]," Cherot says. "The studio always wants to make cuts, and it's hard for me to let go." (June 12)

The Lowdown

Since the underserved African-American audience doesn't Hav Plenty to choose from this summer, Cherot's debut could find a niche in the crowded indie marketplace.
