FERRIS BUELLER (MATTHEW BRODERICK)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Sure, everyone's favorite hooky-playing high-schooler turns truancy into an art form, but look at how much work it is. Ferris has to convince his parents that he's too sick to go to school, concoct elaborate Rube Goldbergian ruses to keep fooling his folks and school officials all day long, and evade the dogged pursuit of the Javert-like Principal Rooney. Still, it's hard to argue with the results. For all his mercurial wit and comic sprightliness, Matthew Broderick seems never to have had as much fun in a performance, before or since.
