Journalists like to complain that Hollywood gets the big and small details of our profession wrong. But we still like watching movies set in the world of the press, maybe because the outsized personalities that characterize newspaper and magazine editors in the movies remind us of the people we work for. Some big-screen editors are tyrants, some are visionaries, and some are both, like Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the fearsome fashion maven of The Devil Wears Prada (out June 30). You don't have to know that the character is loosely inspired by Vogue empress Anna Wintour to appreciate Streep's performance; as with the memorable movie editors on the pages that follow, she'll surely remind you of at least one inspiring or terrifying boss you've toiled under.
