''Actually,'' Smith told EW, regarding his movies, ''if you scrape away the dick jokes, the cynicism, the vulgar language, you're left with really sweet movies about guys who just want to fall in love.'' The first sign of that was the bittersweet Chasing Amy, about two comic-book creators, Holden and Banky (Ben Affleck and Jason Lee, who've both appeared in every Smith movie since Mallrats) whose partnership is disrupted by Holden's rocky romance with a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams, whose two-year relationship with Smith ended shortly after the film's release). Not only did the movie poke fun at Smith's own comics obsession (Jay and Silent Bob grumble about their portrayal in Bluntman and Chronic, the comic they inspire Holden and Banky to create), but it also began Affleck's career as a leading man.
