It's Jaws with Claws. You've got the ineffectual local official (Val Kilmer), the crazy old hunter (Michael Douglas), and the sharp-toothed menace that's picking off the townsfolk. In this loosely fact-based tale, however, the setting is a British colony in 19th century Africa, and the man-eating beasts are two lions whose mysterious intelligence and elusiveness has earned them the nicknames of the movie's title. Actually, it's not clear whether the lions are wily or the humans are Wile E. Coyote-esque in their ineptitude, setting various elaborate but clumsy traps that the lions easily evade. Ultimately, however, Ghost and Darkness rack up a serious body count (in the dozens) and prove as scary as any horror-movie monster.
