Chinatown (1974)
In the scene shown here, private eye Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) sticks his nose into other people's business once too often and nearly gets it sliced off by an unlikely henchman (Roman Polanski, who also directed). The model for the modern Hollywood noir, Chinatown features a flawed and cynical hero who tangles with both lowlifes and power players, a femme fatale (Faye Dunaway) with a hideous secret, a hissable villain (John Huston), a vast conspiracy involving the shaping of Los Angeles as we know it today, and one of the bleakest endings in movie history.
