HERBIE HANCOCK
The 67-year-old jazz icon garnered a surprise Album of the Year nod for his tribute to another legend: Joni Mitchell. River: The Joni Letters, wasn't even in Billboard's Top 200 albums as of press time, but the presence of Academy favorites Norah Jones, Tina Turner, and Corinne Bailey Rae on the album can't have hurt. Still, it was hardly a gimme as he told EW at the announcements, ''You saw the look on my face! I was plenty surprised.'' But, he added, ''I hope this indicates that jazz is still in there and swinging, and swinging with a big bat too.''
