''O,'' the controversial and brutal film that retells Shakespeare's ''Othello'' as a contemporary high school drama, had the misfortune of being made at a time when real-life teen violence became a national obsession. Filming wrapped in 1999, shortly before the mass killings at Colorado's Columbine High School. Finally -- after Miramax delayed the release date seven times and a lawsuit was filed against the studio by the producers -- the domestic rights were sold to Lions Gate, which released the movie on Aug. 31, 2001. (The film is also now available on video and DVD.)
