Bob Hoskins is the focus of this underrated British gangster picture, but Mirren, in one of her sexiest, most hubba-hubba performances as the thug's mistress, is a strong presence. She manipulates the volcanic gangster, controlling his emotions in a way he's barely aware of. Mirren is impeccable at conveying this sort of mind-game-playing through subtle expressions and languorous body language. —KT
