The Age of Innocence (1993)
Martin Scorsese's adaptation of the Edith Wharton classic stars Day-Lewis as Newland Archer, a well-born 19th-century New Yorker who must renounce love (in the form of social pariah Michelle Pfeiffer) for duty and adherence to rigid social convention (in the form of wife Winona Ryder). His usual physicality restrained, Day-Lewis must convey Archer's thwarted passion mostly with his eyes and his forced smile.
