The Crucible (1996)
Arthur Miller's play about the Salem Witch Trials features a typically searing performance from Day-Lewis as John Proctor, a Puritan whose affair with Abigail Williams (Age of Innocence costar Winona Ryder) is his undoing, but who redeems himself with his principled stand against the paranoia and hysteria that decimates the town. Shortly before the film's release, Day-Lewis married the playwright's daughter, filmmaker Rebecca Miller.
