85. LIV ULLMANN
Scenes From a Marriage (1974)
You only have to witness Ullmann's silent howl when her Marianne learns her husband is leaving to know you're watching greatness. But the beauty of her performance is Marianne's incremental evolution from emotional wreck to a woman strong and forgiving enough to soothe her estranged husband's existential angst. Thanks to the vagaries of Academy rules, this film, the apex of Ullmann's collaboration with Ingmar Bergman, was considered ineligible by Oscar. Errors of omission don't get much more myopic.
