81. FAYE DUNAWAY
Mommie Dearest (1981)
Sometimes, more is more. With operatic fervor and a bone-deep understanding of what can drive an actress crazy, Dunaway tore into the role of misbegotten mother Joan Crawford and played her drunk, abusive, tearful, terrified, terrifying at a pitch no other actress would have dared. The movie was widely (and fairly) derided as camp, but Dunaway's performance (scarier still when Crawford is being well behaved) is too discomforting to write off as a joke.
