Sherrybaby (2006)

Gyllenhaal in this role is like a bundle of nerves in tacky clothing: Her just-out-of-jail Sherry is desperate to stay off drugs, reconnect with her young daughter, and gain the respect of those she's disappointed — including the viewer, who witnesses her near-relapse and her self-destructive trysts with inappropriate men. Still, Gyllenhaal imbues Sherry with such yearning and humanity — especially when the reason for her inner turmoil is horrifically revealed — that you'll never stop hoping that maybe, this time, she'll get it right.
