77. JOANNE WOODWARD
The Glass Menagerie (1987)
In husband Paul Newman's adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play, Woodward is Amanda Wingfield, that faded, self-deluded Southern belle, rhapsodizing about her distant past. Forced gaiety and exaggerated gentility come with the part, but Woodward leaves her own mark on the character, playing up the steely survival instinct that compels Amanda to push her children too hard and, ultimately, push them away.
