97. HARRY BELAFONTE
Kansas City (1996)
Solid as an antique desk, Belafonte's masterful mobster, Seldom Seen (often heard), was the high point of an otherwise undercooked Robert Altman film. His rasp manages to sound almost musical as he cracks wise about black nationalist Marcus Garvey's ''Back to Africa'' movement for him, there is no promised land outside of his beloved jazz club.
